What happens when the trending section is now, more than ever, controlled by algorithms?
Social media is having an enormous impact on the evolution of journalism. You will notice that’s a theme in several of the blogs I've posted. More and more people use platforms like Facebook to stay informed. And there’s been quite a lot written about Facebook and how it has approached its strategy to be a major news provider. Here’s one more entry from Nieman Lab, a Harvard-based publication. This offering looks at the impact of the use of algorithms to determine what’s trending on Facebook. The findings are amusing, but they raise some important questions about how we get our news, and how that is determined.
