Since my last post I have released a finding on a public complaint about a CBC.ca report..
The complaint involved a CBC Vancouver report seen on television, heard on radio and carried online in which CBC News enlisted teens aged 17 and 18 to attempt to be served alcohol underage at four local restaurants. It chronicled the attempts with hidden cameras.
The complainant asserted that CBC News directed the teens to break the law. Under CBC Journalistic Standards and Practices, the use of "clandestine methods" in investigative journalism needs to be in the public interest and lawful.
I concluded there was a violation of the journalistic policy. I also indicated CBC News could have minimized harm while achieving the objective of the journalism
